Every Monday, we celebrate the runners who have joined Team Special Children’s Charities for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.
This incredible team is using their miles to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Chicago. We are so grateful for their dedication and generosity!
This week’s featured runner is Grace Bright. Grace told us about her brother Sam and how he motivated her to run the Chicago Marathon for Team SCC.
“Running the Chicago Marathon with Team Special Children’s Charities is deeply personal to me because of my brother, Sam. About two years ago, Sam and I trained for and completed a half marathon together. Although it was initially my idea, Sam became the person who motivated me most throughout the process. We lived about two hours apart during training, which meant squeezing in late-night runs after hours of driving to see one another, virtual workouts, and constant encouragement to keep each other going. Even after developing tendinitis in his foot, Sam committed himself to physical therapy and came back stronger than ever.
When I was considering whether to take on the Chicago Marathon, I honestly wasn’t sure I had the motivation to say yes. Then I thought about Sam and the determination he showed throughout our journey together. He never backed away from a challenge, no matter how difficult it became, and that inspired me to push myself in the same way. Running this marathon feels like an opportunity to honor the perseverance, positivity, and strength he brings into my life every day.
Sam has Down syndrome, and he is an inspiration not only to me, but to our family, friends, and everyone around him. He deserves every opportunity to be celebrated, challenged, included, and empowered to pursue whatever he wants in life, just like anyone else. That is why SCC’s mission means so much to me. Supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is about creating a world where individuals like Sam are seen for their abilities, their potential, and the incredible impact they have on others.
Thanks to Sam (and my incredibly motivating twin sister, Abby), I will be running the Chicago Marathon this fall and would appreciate your support with my fundraising efforts!”
Thank you so much to Grace for being a part of our team! Support her effort by making a donation to her campaign today!

I am excited to be able to raise money for a cause that is close to my heart and to have more of an impact helping both children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities be able to participate in athletic, enrichment, and educational programs so they can live their best lives too.
