Every Monday, we celebrate the runners who have joined Team Special Children’s Charities for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.
This incredible team is using their miles to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Chicago. We are so grateful for their dedication and generosity!
This week’s featured runner is Hayley Lawson. Hayley told us about her running journey and how it resonates with SCC’s mission.
“I’m running the Chicago Marathon with Team Special Children’s Charities because I believe something simple but powerful: everyone deserves to feel empowered, inspired, and included.
SCC’s mission, to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, deeply resonates with me. They create opportunities, open doors, and build communities where individuals are seen for their abilities, not their limitations. That kind of impact matters. It changes lives.
Running, for me, has done the same.
I didn’t grow up a runner. In fact, I only started in December 2024. What began as a small step turned into something that completely transformed my life. Less than a year later, in November 2025, I ran my first ultramarathon, in the desert of Peru. It was one of the hardest and most meaningful experiences I’ve ever had.
Out there, I discovered strength I didn’t know I had. I found resilience, purpose, and even my best friend. Running gave me confidence, clarity, and a sense of belonging I had never felt before.
That’s why this race means so much to me.
Because everyone deserves that feeling, the chance to grow, to be challenged, to connect, and to belong. Through SCC, individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are given those opportunities every day.
So when I run Chicago, I’m not just running for myself. I’m running to support a mission that creates inclusion, builds confidence, and empowers people to live full, meaningful lives.”
Thank you so much to Hayley for being a part of our team! Support her effort by making a donation to her campaign today!

I am excited to be able to raise money for a cause that is close to my heart and to have more of an impact helping both children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities be able to participate in athletic, enrichment, and educational programs so they can live their best lives too.
