Every Monday we celebrate the runners who have joined Team Special Children’s Charities for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.
This incredible team is using their miles to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Chicago. We are so grateful for their dedication and generosity!
This week’s runner is Maggie Worth, who is joining us for the first time! Maggie told us why she joined Team SCC:
My entire life I’ve tried to do what matters – whether volunteering, or befriending those who might need an extra friend – I just want to make an impact on someone’s life, make someone’s day better. I befriended Mike when I was a child, and knew him my entire life – through moving away for college, moving to Chicago for work – every time I went home to my sleepy Connecticut town, I’d run in to Mike – whether riding his bike on a town running path, or working at our local grocery store. Mike struggled with his developmental and intellectual disabilities, found some darkness in his life, but then found the light – he was a volunteer fire fighter, he rode horses – he made the best out of his life, until a terribly swift cancer diagnosis took his life from him. Mike taught us about patience, he taught us about inclusivity in the early 2000’s when DEI programs didn’t exist – I learned so much from him, and he made me a better person. Programs and funding, like the Special Children’s Charities, were integral in his path from darkness to light, and were able to help him get jobs, get rides to work, have access he and his parents didn’t know existed for so many years. I would be honored to run for him, and so many others, who just need that little extra support.
Thank you so much to Maggie for being a part of our team! Support her effort by making a donation to her campaign today!

That’s why being part of Team Special Children’s Charities means so much to me—it’s a way to pair something I enjoy with a cause that’s personal, and to be part of something that truly makes an impact.

Marathon Monday: Maria Mergal
Having people in my life with different abilities, I’ve seen firsthand how much it matters for everyone to have the resources and space to thrive. That’s exactly what this organization provides and it’s why this one feels personal.

This journey isn’t just about finishing a race — it’s about making a difference. Every mile I run is for something bigger than myself.
Thank you for helping me turn miles into meaningful impact.

Through out my life, I have always been a part of activities and events that are sponsoring children/young adults with special needs. I’ve noticed that throughout the years that the help, guidance, supplies, have only gone up in price for these families of children with special needs, and having these opportunities to raise money for these children and adults is one of the kindest things you can do.

As a mom of two, this journey is also about showing my kids the power of inclusion, empowerment, and giving back.
