Every Monday we celebrate the runners who have joined Team Special Children’s Charities for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.
This incredible team is using their miles to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Chicago. We are so grateful for their dedication and generosity!
This week’s featured runner is Lexi Cogley. Lexi is running with Team Special Children’s Charities for the second time, and she told us about what brought her back to the charity team:
“I’m honored and excited to be running my second Chicago Marathon this October with Team Special Children’s Charities! After an incredible experience last year, I knew I wanted to come back to take on the race again and continue supporting such a meaningful cause. SCC’s mission to promote, foster, and encourage physical and mental well-being through athletics, recreation, and social connection for youth and adults with disabilities is one that deeply resonates with me.
My cousin Joy, who has Down syndrome, has been involved with special recreation sports since she was eight years old. Over the past decade, she’s had the opportunity to participate in sports like soccer, basketball, and swimming. These experiences have given her confidence, community, and lifelong friendships. Watching Joy find connection and purpose through sports has shaped the way I view inclusive athletics and deepened my appreciation for organizations like SCC that make these experiences possible.
Movement has also played an important role in my own life as well. From running cross-country in high school, to taking (and later teaching) group fitness classes in college, staying active has been a consistent outlet for me, both physically and mentally. Some of my closest friendships and favorite memories have come through shared movement, which is why it’s so meaningful to support an organization that creates those same opportunities for people of all abilities.
Thank you to Special Children’s Charities for letting me be part of this extraordinary team once again. I’m proud to run for Joy and all those whose lives are touched by your incredible work!”
Thank you so much to Lexi for being a part of our team! Support her effort by making a donation to her campaign today!
