Every Monday we celebrate the runners who have joined Team Special Children’s Charities for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.
This incredible team is using their miles to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Chicago. We are so grateful for their dedication and generosity!
This week we are featuring three runners from the same family who have made training for this year’s marathon and supporting SCC a family affair. They are event being joined by two other family members! Check out Maggie, Kathleen and Moira’s stories.
Maggie Nolan:
“I have been running since my sophomore year of high school, so it has been about six years now. During my junior year, I joined the cross country team at Mother Mcauley High school, which helped me push my limits and grow as a runner. It taught me how to challenge myself and compete with intention. Running has always been something I love as it gives me a chance to clear my head and manage stress in a healthy way. I am currently a senior in the Nursing program at Marquette University, and running has been a constant source of balance throughout college. It has been a reliable outlet, especially during my rigorous courses and demanding schedule.
For the 2025 Chicago marathon I will be running alongside my cousins Kathleen Mixan Vari, Colleen Mixan Mikaitis, Marykate Mixan Creegan, and Moira Mixan. I am the youngest of the group, but despite the age gapes- Kathleen and Colleen are 19 years older than me- we’ve always been incredibly close. We have spent countless holidays and vacations together, and while we know how to have fun, we also love lacing up our shoes and going for a run, even on vacation mornings after long days.
Kathleen and I have been training together all summer, waking up at 5am to get our miles in before work at 730am. Just this past Tuesday, July 1st, Kathleen, Colleen, and I ran 11 miles together starting at 4:45am. It was definitely a challenge, but running side by side keeps us motivated as we push each other to the finish line every time.
I am honored to run in support of Special Children’s Charities, a cause that has been close to my heart since childhood. My family has been involved with SCC for many years, my father, Bill Nolan, even served on the board. One of my favorite memories from volunteering for SCC was during a volleyball tournament hosted at Mount Carmel High School, where I had the opportunity to meet and play alongside several of the athletes. It was a powerful experience that allowed me to witness firsthand the positive impact SCC has on their athletes lives. I’m proud and excited to be running on behalf of such an incredible organization!”
Kathleen Mixan Vari:
“I have the privilege to run for a second time with my sisters and cousins for a charity near and dear to my family’s heart. Living in a community where volunteering and supporting one another no matter the situation instilled a sense of pride in me to help others. Growing up, we all have volunteered for numerous events throughout Chicago supporting the efforts of those directly impacting the academic, social-emotional, and personal lives of those with disabilities.
Playing multiple sports in high school and softball in college, I have always worked out and kept in shape. Running has now become my outlet to destress and feel good, while spending time with family.
I cannot wait to share the excitement and adrenaline rush you get while running throughout the city, seeing familiar faces cheering you on, and experiencing how people from all different backgrounds come together to accomplish the same goal.”
Moira Mixan:
“I’m excited to rep red white and blue and run the Chicago Marathon in support of Special Children’s Charities! It’s an incredible honor to represent a cause that champions inclusion and gives all children the opportunity to thrive, no matter the challenges they face.
What makes this even more special is running alongside my cousins. While I don’t have sisters, they’ve always filled that role. Despite being a few years apart, we’ve shared a lifelong bond built on love, laughter, and endless support. I know our grandparents would be so proud, knowing they laid the foundation for such a strong connection.
Growing up, our parents brought us to volunteer together, instilling in us the value of giving back, making this race feel especially meaningful. That foundation makes running for Special Children’s Charities feel like a full-circle moment.
As we take on all 26.2 miles side by side I know the miles will fly by with plenty of laughs and memories along the way.”
Thank you so much to this entire family for being a part of our team! Support their effort by making a donation to their campaigns today!
